Part of the Genealogy of the Brown Family. 1st. Edward Brown was born in Wales, raised in England and came to Virginia when a young man. He married a Miss Brown of that State. They had seven sons, to wit: Samuel, William, John, Henry, Benjamin, Beverly and Robert. 2nd. William, son of Edward, married Sarah Long of Culpepper County Va. Their sons were; Henry, William, Benjamin, Samuel, and John. 3rd. John Brown, son of William and grandson of Edward was a silver- smith by trade. He married Mary Ellen Tarver, near Snow-hill in Green County, N.C. (then Dobbs Co.) in the year 1774 and settled on Contentnea Creek where he died. After the settlement of his estate his widow and family moved to Tenn. and located on a tract of land at the head of Town Creek (now Eaton's X Roads) which they purchased from Elizabeth Donaldson. There were six children to wit; Robert Tarver, John and Thomas (who were twins) William, Rebecca and Mary Ellen. 4th. Robert Tarver Brown was born Nov. 19, 1775, married Catherine Valle, at St. Genivieve, Mo. John married first, Mary Moore Allison, sister of Uriah Allison, 2nd, Mrs. Uriah Allison widow of Uriah Allison. Thomas, married Jane Adams McElwee, Feb. 18, 1801 I Knox Co., Tenn., Rev. John Winton of the M. E. Church officiating. William, married Sara Kimbrough. Mary married first, Zachariah Ayres, 2nd, Dr. Richards. Rebecca married Robert Taylor, a surveyor who ran the boundary lines of Roane County when it was laid out. Thomas and Jane Brown had three children, Wm. Franklin, John Smith T., and Mary Elizabeth Caroline. Wm. Franklin married Amanda M. Renfro. They had 12 children. John Smith T. married Elizabeth Tarver. They had three children. Mary E. C., married E. C. Sevier, they had nine children. ************************************* Some of the descendants of the Brown family may want to become members of the D.A.R. or S.A.R., and this history of the family is therefore given; William Brown, son of Edward and father of John, was a Member of the Committee of Safety of the Provincial Congress of N.C. Reference; National Number 32714, of the D.A.R. John, son of William, served in the Revolution as follows; Enlisted as Ensign in 1775 in the N.C. line; commissioned Captain of the 1st Reg. April 26, 1778. Reference; N.C. Colonial Records, Vol. 16, p. 1009. Army Accounts Vol.17, p. 195, Shenks History of N.C., states he was promoted to a Colonency, p. 474. D.A.R. Nat., #985. A brother of John's. also a nephew by marriage were killed at the Battle of Guildford Court House. (John, the son of William and grandson of Edward) There was a brother of his wife killed in the same battle. Signed W. E.
