(DAR insignia) MRS. W. L. PEEL MRS. SAMUEL LUMPKIN HONORARY REGENT REGENT MRS. F.L H. BROWNELL MISS ALICE MAY MASSENGALE TREASURER REGISTRAR MRS. GEORGE LEWIS PRATT MRS. HAMILTON BLOCK CORRESPONDING SECRETARY RECORDING SECRETARY MRS. JOHN A. PERDUE CHAIRMAN OF BOARD JOSEPH HABERSHAM CHAPTER ATLANTA, GEORGIA Jan. 1 - 1918 Mr. C. K. Hill, - My Dear Mr. Hill--I am using my very first 1918 in writing to you, hoping to atone a little for [your - crossed out] my neglect in 1917. For several months I have been like a man watching a three ring circus, and, in consequence, am rather dizzy from the chaos of work around me. Only a few days ago I was shocked to find in another pile of papers a long envelope from you, containing your Supplemental Application to S. A. R. on Sumter line, and asking if I would endorse a D.A.R. paper for your mother like this. I thought I (page 2) had returned it to you with an O.K. Also you asked if I would endorse D. A. R. papers for your sister on the Hill line as we have made it out. I certainly would, (but do not think it would be accepted without the name of Joab Hill's wife , on a copy of his will or Bible record showing the de- scent. I have had a genealogist friend in Surry Co. of late, who looked again for his marriage. Now I think he may have married in Tenn., and hope yet to locate where he settled. There was a Capt. Bar- ney in N. C. during the Revolution and he might be the maternal grandfather of your Barney Hill. I will try to locate him. My genealogist found in Wilkes Co. N. C. the will of a James Hill (probably brother of your Wm, who m. Hannaniah) in 1820--which mentions sons Reuben, Jonas, John & Valentine. That places the Jonas name in your stock, and I find Jonas Hill (b. 1762) a revolutionary pensioner in Franklin Co. Tenn. He may have been a cousin of Joab. I hope to spend more time in our library now and will be on the look out for all Tenn. Hills as well as N. C. I wrote to my cousin, the Secty of State of N. C. about Edom Kendrick land grant but have not heard yet. He may be waiting for time to look it up himself, as his son Samuel served in Va. I guess Edom did too & his grant would have been in Ky; instead of Tenn. for Va. service. He might have sold out & gone No. Tenn, (where peanuts grow bigger). I find among the Ky. revolutionary pensioners a Benson Kindrick who served in Va & was living in Bourbon Co. Ky. in 1730. Do you know if Samuel had a brother Ben or Benson? I am sorry I have not been able to learn more yet about Moses Wright, but I hope to in some old Methodist books at the Library. Several volumes with no index & it will take time to look over. The Register of Wills in Phila, Pa. pays no attention to any letters, and I do not know any genealogist there now who will look up data for a reasonable sum. I have note of two Methodist Preachers, Rev. Wm Wright of Va, in 1810, and Rev. Josiah Wright, who lived in N.C., S. C., & Tenn. soon after the revolution. I find a Lewis Wright (page 3) who served in Va, was rev. pensioner in Greene Co. Pa., and he must have bee kin to the Moses of Phila who had son Lewis in 1814. Lewis Wright, the pensioner was born 1757, and probably old enough to have been father of your Moses, but more likely was brother. I have not yet been able to get data on the Dale line, though I have written to Augusta and Jackson Co. In regard to Carpenters, I wrote my sister to look up Timothy in a large Carpenter genealogy in the Congressional Library at Washington, but she did not get to it when there last, and said she would go down again soon & look him up. That was Dec. 1, and now she is literally snowed under up in the mountains & may have to wait some time. She lives at Bluemont, Shenandoah Valley & goes to Washington by trolley car very often. Hope to make a better report before long. Best wishes for a Happy New Year--may you get all you go after! I can't forget you because I am munching on your toothsome Xmas gift all day long...
