Harriman, Tennessee, May 25, 1920. Mr. R. A. Atkinson, 221 North Liberty St., Baltimore, Md. My dear Mr. Atkinson:- Your letter of the 23rd received to-day, and it was a pleasure to hear from one who is genuinely interested in the LANE genealogy. I too, in my long search for records of the family, have met with unconcern and a seeming lack of interest, but have kept digging on the line, till at last I feel that I have found about all the records contain. How unfortunate that I did not learn of your interest in the family, when I first began working on the line, for I feel that it would have saved me much time and money. I have done a lot of work on the line myself and then I had a man in Annapolis make a search of the records there for Lane data. I have the copies of the records he got for me, and if you care to examine them I will gladly send them to you. He also sent me photostatic copies of the activities of Maj. Saml. Lane in the Council of Maryland, which I will send if you care to see them. I suppose you have seen them though, as you live so near Annapolis you must have searched the records there, yourself. I dont think I have had any assistance from any one you have given your data to, at least no one has ever mentioned your name until the past month I wrote your Aunt Mrs. Schleicher regarding the matter, and she referred me to you, and I wrote you immediately. Mrs. S. did not give me any thing as she said she had given you her promise to not pass on the data she had for her Colonial Dame papers, to any one outside of her immediate family. I learned she was a member of the Colonial Dames on the services of Maj. Saml. Lane, and wrote her regarding the matter. Since writing Mrs. Schleicher, my sister has been invited to join the Tenn. Society of the Colonial Dames, and I expect to have her use the data I have about Maj. Lane for a supplemental paper, when she joins. She will use either one of two Hill Colonial Ancestors for her application papers, the other with Maj. Lane as supplementals. I feel sure I have all the data required for her Lane papers to be verified. I regret to say that I have been unable to get any data on the Bibber (Bibbin) family from the Tenn. descendants. I have written hundreds of letters on all the allied lines, but have succeeded in getting nothing except what my man in Annapolis sent me regarding the Tidings family, Pettitia [could be Pertitia as there is a strike-over on original: Archivist] Tidings father was Richard Tidings. No activities of Richard Tidings except to help in Prorogative Court as appraiser and surety, and this will not do for C.D. papers, will it? (page 2) Mr. R.A.A. #2 I wish I could establish the maiden name of Sarah, wife of Richard Lane, but I have so many other things to do that I think I'll let the matter rest as it stands, for the present. I am working on all my lines now, and as the Lane line is pretty well established, I'll not send for the data you have, but spend that money on the lines not as well worked out. I would like to say in this connection, that in case I have any trouble about my sisters papers on the Lane line in the C.D., I will send you the $25.00 and get your assistance. Will you agree to this? I am so glad to find some one that charges for what they have. I know how much it costs and how many weary hours of work it takes to establish a line, and then the kin folks think you should gladly hand out what you have worked so hard for, without pay, and some times with out thanks. I know from experience, and I want to commend you for taking the stand you have. I also want to thank you for offering to get up the Lane data you have, for me, but under the circumstances, I don’t think it would be of any benefit to me, do you? In this connection did you know that Margaret Lane, wife of Maj. Saml. Lane was born Joye? This was shown in the search made at Annapolis, and since Mrs. Schleicher did not know her maiden name, I wonder if you did. I regret that you have not the authentic records proving the connection with the English family, for I would like to have that. The naming of their country estates the same names in this country and in England would indicate it was the same family, but to prove it is a different thing. This is rather a rambling letter, but I find letter[s] of this kind are very hard to write, so I hope you will over look its rambling nature. With kindest regards and best wishes to one who has an interest in Lane genealogy, I am, Cordially yours, CKH/K ================================================== Transcription copyright © RoaneTNHistory.org 2005.
