Harriman, Tennessee, August 2, 1920. Mr. R. A. Atkinson, 221 North Liberty St., Baltimore, Md. My dear Mrs. Atkinson:- Your letter of the 30th enclosing the Trader Notes received promptly. No need for apology about the Trader Notes, as I told you I was in no hurry about your returning them. I only hope you will find them of help to you, when you take up genealogy again. In this connection, I wrote Dr. Francis Culver, Genealogist for the Md. Society of Colonial Dames, and suggested that he call on you regarding the Lane line. He has my sisters C.D. papers for examination and approval before they are filed, and between us we are trying to establish the maiden name of Sarah, wife of Richard Lane. As you will recall, the Trader notes gives the marriage of a Richard Lane to Christian Toogood, daughter of Col. Josias Toogood. I believe this is the Richard whose wife is given in the St;. Paul Parish Register, as Sarah, only, and the mother of our ancestor Tidings or Tidence. I think she must have been Sarah Christian, daughter of Col. Josias Toogood, but was recorded as Sarah. Dr. Culver thinks Richard was married twice, and Christian was the second wife. It is about this very point I suggested he come to see you, and if he does come, I hope you can convince him, and get him to work to find the needed record to prove what I thinl about the matter/ Col. Toogood is as eligible C. D. ancestor, Dr. C. writes me. He wrote me some time ago and said he could furnish an additional C.D. ancestor in the line for a certain sum, which I sent, but on investigation he finds that Dutton Lane as Deputy Sheriff in Baltimore Co., is not an eligible office for C.D. papers. Mrs. Schleicher sent me the data that Dutton was a Deputy Sheriff, but the eligibility list for the Md. Society of C.D.'s, did not give deputy sheriffs, so I thought he must have some thing we did not have. I do hope we can prove the maiden name of Sarah, yet. I have a genealogist in Baltimore working on the Bibber line and she writes that the records give Esther's name plainly as "Bobby" and not Bibber. The lady who is doing this work (Miss A. Eleanor Hulls, The Arundel) has gone away for a vacation, so the matter is at rest till she (page 2) Mr. R.A.A. #2 returns. I do not know just when this will be, but I hope it wont be very long. it is expensive and not very satisfactory to have the work done in this way, but I cannot leave home for work of this kind myself, so just have to put up with it, and do the best I can. I am hoping for some finds yet, as I am anxious to con- tribute to what you have already gathered. You have been so generous that I feel under many obligations to you. I know I cannot repay you, but if I can contribute some data to the amount already established and verified by the Maryland Colonial Dames, I will feel that my efforts have not been in vain. I am glad to know you are having a vacation. Where are you going to spend it, in Texas? If so, why not come by Harriman on your return East? I live in a hotel and am not in position to entertain you very well, but I would be delighted to have you stop to see me, if you think you could stand it. I will be away for a few days the latter part of the month, about the 24th to the 29th. My cousin and most intimate friend is to be married on the 25th, in Louisville, and I am going to assist him in getting the knot tied. I was so in hopes that he would slip away and celebrate the event very quietly, but you know the girl in the case, must have her way. If you can come, please let me know what time would suit you best, and I will do my best to arrange to be at home, for I certainly want you to stop for a few days, anyway. As my Father always said, I am sure you can stand for a few days, what I stand all the time/ Hoping to hear from you soon, I am with kindest regards and best wishes, Cordially yours, CKH/K ================================================== Transcription copyright © RoaneTNHistory.org 2005.
