Harriman, Tennessee, June 13, 1924. Dear Dr. Adams:- I have received from Mr. John B. Clements a copy of the Statutes of the Baronial Order of Runnemede, from which I think I am eligible, rhrough my descent from Robert De Vere, Earl of Oxford (one of the Sureties for the Magna Charta) and I am writing you to know if you will undertake to qualify me for membership? Please understand in the beginning that I wish to pay you for this work. Through Henry Isham of Virginia (on whose service I have a supplemental Colonial Wars paper) five generations back Thomas Isham of Pitchley married Elene DeVere who is in direct descent from Robert DeVere. This much I have from “Of Sceptered Race” by Annah Robinson Watson, pp. 246-7, but this book does not give the line complete and I have no reference books here from which it can be had. I will be so very glad if you will do this work for me and will Gladly send check to cover cost of the work on receipt of your Bill. I have a friend in Tennessee who I feel sure will invite me to join as soon as he knows I am eligible, however I have not mentioned the matter to him and will not do so till I have my papers ready, if they can be ade up I will be glad to hear from you regarding this matter at your convenience. Cordially yours, (signed) C.K. Hill CKH/K ================================================== Transcription copyright © RoaneTNHistory.org 2005. All rights reserved.
