402 Morgan Street, Harriman, Tennessee, February 6, 1931. Mrs. Willis Hitzing, Whitehaven, Tennessee. My dear Mrs. Witzing:- Your letter of the 4th, from Decatur, has just reached me, and I hasten to reply and extend my sincere sympathy in the loss of your husband. Please do pardon my seeming neglect of writing you, but your letter is the first intimation of great sorrow, so I am sure you will pardon my ot writing you at the time of your loss. Please accept my thanks in the honor you have conferred upon me in wishing to appoint me Tennessee Chairman, Committee of Preservation of Records. While I deeply appreciate this honor, circumstances prevent my accepting, much to my regret. My Mother, who is almost eighty and nearly an invalid, lives with me, and besides I have a young daughter just at the age she most need my attention, so between the two, it is hard for me to ever leave home, even for a day, so I shall have to decline. I think you will recall that I was unable to attending the first meeting of our Society at Chattanooga, on account of the serious illness of my Mother. She was ill for many weeks, and at the time it seemed impossible for her to ever get up again. I do hope you will understand that I am only telling you of these things in order for you to understand why I cannot accept this chairmanship. For the very same reasons it will be impossible for me to attend the National meeting in Washington in April. It may be however, that I can attend the state meeting, if it is held near enough to Harriman. I rather think the meeting will be held in Memphis, in which case, I cannot go. A few days ago I sent you a letter in regard to Mrs. Laura R. Morton, of Memphis, whom I know to be eligible to membership in the F. & P. I trust you received this letter. If there is any thing I can do in helping about her papers, please let me know, as I am anxious that we grow in numbers, if in no other way. Again extending my sympathy in your great loss, and thanking you for the compliment paid me, I am, Sincerely yours, (Mrs. Allen Russell Davis) nhd-k ================================================== Transcription copyright © RoaneTNHistory.org 2005.
