Harriman, Tennessee, Dec. 19, 1918. Mr. John C. Daves, V.P. Baltimore, Md. My dear Mr. Daves:- In looking over notes for the chart on application papers, I find there is some confusion regarding the services of Wm. Hill Sr. & Lieut. Wm. Hill Jr., and I would like to have you help me get the matter straight. Please note what “Wheeler” says in his Reminiscenses of N.C., page 432; regarding Wm. Hill Sr. being Chaplain & Member of the Convention at Hillsboro 1775. Part of this is incorrect, as to the name of his wife, as she was Susannah Smithers, Eliza Halbert being his daughter(.) Eliza Hill, married Wm. Halbert 1765. Also that Wm. Hill Secy of State of N.C. was his son. The Secy. of State was his grandson, and son of Lieut. Wm. Hill, as there is no John mentioned among the 10 childred named in the Will of Wm. Hill Sr., but a John Hill is mentioned as one of the children of Wm. Hill Jr., I have always thought Wm. Hill Sr., was the Chaplain at Battle of Guildford Court House, and that Wm. Hill Jr., (Lieut.) was a Member of the Convention at Hillsboro, 1775, as well as Lieut. of the 1st. N.C. Regiment. I do so much want to get proof of the services of Wm. Hill Sr., and I hope you can help me prove it. Further regarding the data for chart of application, I have the names of the children of Wm. Hill Sr., and who some of them married and their children, names of the children of Lieut. Wm. Hill Jr., who most of them married, names of numerous grand and great grand children, names of the children of Lt. Col. Joab Hill (son of Wm. H. Jr.,) but cannot give who any of them married except my grandfather as the balance of the family moved West and we have no records of them. Will this be sufficient data for the chart?
