Harriman, Tennessee, April 7, 1919. Mr. John C. Daves, V.P. Chamber of Commerce, Baltimore, Md. My dear Mr. Daves:- In reply to your letter of the 4th. you sent me the institution, by-laws & etc some time ago, so don’t both(er) about it again. Thank you very much for your invitation to look you up and I shall do so if I have an opportunity. I am a descendant of Capt. Wm. Sumpter of Burke Co. N.C., brother of General Thomas Sumpter of S.C., and I have a cousin whom I would like to have join the N.C. Society of the Cincinnati. Under the Rule of 1854, could this cousin join as the collateral representative of General Thomas Sumpter? You will understand that this cousin is the same relation to Capt. Wm. Sumpter that I am, being descended from Capt. Sumpter on our maternal side. Please investigate this case and let me hear from you at your convenience. Yours very truly, C.K. Hill APR 9 – 1919 CKH/K (handwritten by Mr. Daves at bottom of Mr. Hill’s letter—transcriptionist:) My dear Mr. Hill, Please excuse the informality of this note, but I am much rushed by other work today. Both Gen. Thomas Sumter – Capt. Wm. Sumter had only service in the War of the Revolution which would not entitle them to representation in the Society of the Cincinnati. If your kinsman can tie up to some Continental officer, I should be glad to take up his case. Sincerely, John C. Daves V.P. ================================================== Transcription copyright © RoaneTNHistory.org 2005. All rights reserved. Archivist: Transcription and scan by G. Anne Sloan
