Harriman, Tennessee, May 24, 1919. Mr. John C. Daves, V.P., Chamber of Commerce, Baltimore, Md. My dear Mr. Daves:- Thank you very much for my diploma which came several day ago. In further reference to the question of my cousin becoming A MEMBER OF THE Cincinnati, would it be very much trouble to refer to Heitmans and see if John Sumpter, of the Continental Army of Va., served as an officer? This John Sumpter was a brother of General Thomas and Capt. Wm. (handwritten note inserted at this point by Mr. Daves--transcriptionist:)[ ? Continental Service] Sumpter, of whom I wrote you on April 7th. Also let me know if a descendant of Aquilla Giles, who served on the Staff of Gen. St. Clair, is eligible to membership in the N.C. Society? I think Aquilla Giles or some descendant, was a member of the Md. Society at some time, but don’t think the family is represented now. Thanking you in advance for your attention to these matter, and with kindest regards, I am, Sincerely yours, C.K. Hill CKH/K (handwritten at bottom of letter by Mr. Daves --transcriptionist:) The proper representative of Major Aquilla Giles is entitled to membership under the Rule of 1854; he was not a member of the Maryland Society, nor has he ever been represented in it. ================================================== Transcription copyright © RoaneTNHistory.org 2005.
