Harriman, Tennessee, May 26, 1920. Mr. John Collins Daves, 214 Chamber of Commerce, Baltimore, Md. My dear Mr. Daves:- Some time ago I wrote you regarding membership in the N.C. Society of the Cincinnati as a collateral representative of Gen. Thos. Sumter of South Carolina, and you replied that Gen. Sumter had no service in the Continental Army, but had service in the Militia. I have been working on my Sumter line (I descend through his brother Wm. Sumter of N.C., Capt. of Militia in Burke Co.) and I have come across a booklet by Judge H.A.M. Smith of Charleston S.C. which I am mailing you to-day. Please refer to pages 28, 29, 30, regarding his service in the Continental Army, and see if his service cannot be established. I am sorry to ask you to do this for me, but I know of no one more capable of helping me than yourself, and I am so anxious to have his Continental services established. If it can be done, can a collateral representative be admitted to membership in the N.C. Society of the Cincinnati, or would he have to apply to the S.C. Society? Personally I would rather have the one applying for membership, apply to the N.C. Society, but I am not sure that can be done. If it is necessary to expend any funds to do this work I will be more than glad to pay, if you will advise the amount. I will be pleased to hear from you regarding this matter, and when you have finished with the booklet, please return it. Thanking you in advance, I am, with kindest regards and best wishes, Cordially yours, CKH/K ================================================== Transcription copyright © RoaneTNHistory.org 2005.
