My dear Mr. Daves:-  On receipt of your letter of the 12th,
I immediately wrote to the Librarian, Virginia State
Library, Richmond, regarding the regiment Lt. William
Randolph belonged to, and date he was made a Lieutenant,
and quote from his letter as follows:

“The assistant State archivest (Mr. Morgan P. Robinson,
Archivest, being away on his vacation) tells me that she
thinks you have examined everything that we have in the
archives department and that your friend Mr. Cridlin also examined this material for information in reference to
Lieut. William Randolph.  We are unable to say to what regiment Lieut. Randolph belonged and at what time he was
made Lieutenant.  I am sorry.

I regret exceedingly that I am unable to give you the information you asked for, but you see I am not able to do so, however I hope this will not hinder my cousin from becoming a member of the N.C. Society of the Cincinnati on the services of Lieut. William Randolph, and will await your reply anxiously.

I hope to be able to attend the meeting of the N.C. Society next April, and I would like very much to be able to bring
my cousin along, as a member.
