Harriman, Tennessee, Nov. 21, 1921. Hon. James Branch Cabell, Dumbarton, Va. Dear Mr. Cabell:- I am enclosing wherewith my application papers to the Va. Society of Colonial Wars, which have been returned by the Secretary, Mr. Morgan P. Robinson, on account of not being endorsed by two members. On March 16th, 1920, you wrote me as follows; “it is, strictly speaking, required that the applicant be known personally by his two endorsers: but I may whisper that the rule has not always been enforced, and that letters of recommendation would be acceptable.” Again on April 20, 1920, you wrote me as follows: “Your preliminary application blank and two letters I have passed on to the Secretary of the Society of Colonial Wars, from whom you should hear later.” Such a long time elapsed before I forwarded my pedigree papers to Mr. Robinson, the fact that I sent letter of recommendation, must have escaped your memory, but I trust you will be able to have my papers completed with out any further trouble. I am sure you will recall our correspondence in regard to this point. Thanking you for past favors and hoping this explains the matter fully, I am, Cordially yours, CKH/K ================================================== Transcription copyright © RoaneTNHistory.org 2005.
